Blue collars are fraying

Financial Post (National Post), Duncan Mavin

OCM President, Michel Jullian, was interviewed for this Financial Post article about “the factors expected to influence the blue-collar workforce.” The article notes that “two-thirds of new jobs in the next few years will require a post-secondary education” – including in the trades.

OCM’s Jullian is quoted as saying, “On the shop floor, you need people who have at least two or three years of college training. They need an understanding of machine automation, and computers big time. And they need to be famliar with manufacturing techniques and processes.” He says that’s because manufacturers that will survive over the next 5-10 years will “focus on high-precision, nice products, and low-to-medium volumes.”
