Ottawa’s OCM Manufacturing Celebrates 25 Years of Business
OCM Manufacturing marks a milestone in its business history this week, as the local electronics manufacturing service provider marks its 25th year in operation.
Located in Ottawa since its inception in 1988, OCM manufactures nearly 300 electronic products on a contract basis for about 30 different customers. The company operates from a 15,000 square foot facility, which it owns on Thurston Drive in the Ottawa Business Park.
“It’s been a fascinating 25 years”, said company Chairman, Dr. Michel Jullian. “When we began, the PC was still an idea, cellular telephones weren’t around, and the Internet was several years away from commercial use. Now, we see new ideas and designs for electronics products—most of them network-connected in some way—coming through our doors almost every day.”
OCM roots go back to the Ontario Centre for Microelectronics. In 1988, the provincial government decided to privatize the Centre and Dr. Jullian took over the Product Development Division. Two years later, prompted by interest from two major customers, OCM was born and started into contract manufacturing. The company never looked back. “I felt there was a viable business within that organization. The challenge was to realign its purpose and we settled on contract manufacturing,” he said.
George Henning, a 16-year veteran of the company and now OCM’s President, acknowledges that high technology is a cyclical business, but notes that OCM has remained viable by embracing change and actively involving employees in company planning.
“We’ve tried to be open with our employees and customers, kept communications flowing, and listened to their ideas and input. We’re a stronger company because of it and that’s a big part of why we’re still here today”, he said.
